Viewing Album: PRR K4s Locomotives
By:
Gary Everhart
Dates:
6/1/1945 - 8/1/1951
Album Info:
The Pennsylvania Railroad often referred to itself as the "Standard Railroad of the World" and to millions of rail travelers, millions of servicemen during World War II, and railfans for over 80 years, the Class K-4s was, and to many still is, the "Standard Passenger Locomotive". 475 K4s locos were built and served especially well during the heavy WW II traffic era. These are some original photos of these beautiful locomotives. Unfortunately the location and dates of these photos were not marked on most of them. Most of these are new to the RR Archives site.

Title:
PRR 4-6-2 #2445
Description:
This 1917 K4s was an example of an Altoona Shops built Pacific, here in a gritty industrial setting. Note the tender is loaded with coal, ready for a long haul! Date is approximate. Thanks to Thomas Ayers (see comment below), the location is probably the PRR yard in West Philadelphia, PA. Thanks, Thomas, for you help in identifying the location!

PRR 4-6-2 #5482
Description:
Near the end of the construction period, this 1927 Altoona Shops built Pacific still retained the 80" drivers and generated 205 psi boiler pressure for its 27"x28" cylinders. Here it rests in the Rose Lake yard near East St Louis, IL, circa 1940's. Bob Lorenz photo credit.

Title:
PRR 4-6-2 #5406
Description:
This is an example of a 1927 Baldwin built Pacific for the PRR. Being late in the game, it reflected all the tweeks and minor improvements made during the last 10 years of building the 4-6-2's. One of the few photos is this album with a location and date listed on the back of the photo. Bob Lorenz gets the photo credit.
