They have just come down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve with a 57-car TrucTrain and are passing the derailment site with caution. The caboose is #477954. They've come down the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a merchandise freight train and are passing under the 12th Street Footbridge on their way to the Enola Yards. This train seems to have two "sections": the first has 37 cars and N-8 cabin car #478086, while the second (not pictured herein) has 35 cars and cabin #477746. (#14 of 21)

All were built by GM-EMD. #2290 and #2264 are EF-25's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #2290 was constructed in June of 1964, while #2264 was built in May of the same year. They're pulling a westbound merchandise train past WORKS Tower. What's notable, here, is that this train is on one of the "passenger" tracks and will not stop in Altoona to change crews. In 1965, this was the exception ~ nowadays, it is the norm. (#34 of 44)

They are about to pcss under the 17th Street Bridge in Juniata with a 95-car ore train and caboose #477467. Visible at the far right are the East Altoona Roundhouse (foreground) and the East Altoona Coaling Tipple (background). Owherwise, the photo shows dozens and dozens of deadlined locomotives (on the right) and rolling stock (to the left).
